Planning on signing my lease tonight. Still torn between whether I should take the 15,000 or 18,000 miles/year option (either $262 or $292/month). The only drive-off fee is the first month's payment.

Note: Maryland's excise tax is on the selling price of the vehicle (including freight and dealer processing fees). In the end, the selling price of the car is in the mid $23,000s if I include the graduation credit ($500) for an SE with fast charge.

Didn't sign yet because the car needs to be transferred to the dealership, but will be going back on Monday. For apples to apples comparisons, the monthly payment EXCLUDING tax, license, acquisition, and doc fees, the offer I received was $186/month for 15,000 miles.

I am charging my eGolf SEL with the same 40A OpenEVSE that I charged my Mercedes B. The eGolf tells the EVSE to supply 30A so the rest is wasted. The eGolf is J1772 compliant .

I build OpenEVSE's as a hobby. I like the Quick Charge Power's 40A J1772 cable. The paired wires make it smaller than most 30A cables and it is about $15 more.

eBay is a fairly good source for J1772 cables. Sometimes you can find used ones in the $100 region. Just avoid Rema cables unless you can upgrade them. Blink had a lot of trouble with them.

I have a couple of EVSE's listed on the RAV4 EV forum. A 40A and a 16A 240V units. You can also get everything you need from Chris's OpenEVSE site. He sells kits with most everything you need. I think the cables are extra but I am not a complete unit buyer so I could be wrong.

If you do not count your time it is cheaper to build a DIY ver 2 board. A while back Chris posted the design and I buy boards and build them up. His ver 4 surface mount board is smaller but usually space is not a consideration. Good parts from China are on eBay but it takes several weeks to get them.

I also have an extra (portable) EVSE that can either be charged from 120 (20A) or 240 (30A) that was built by Glenn if you need one. Nothing wrong with it, my wife and I use the 40A wall unit he built for us and we don't take the eGolf anywhere that would necessitate a stronger portable unit.

One of the things I want to check is the maximum current at 120V. The Leaf can charge at full current, As I understand it the Tesla charger in my Mercedes B is limited to 20A. I can test the eGolf at its at least 30A but it is only a test. I charge at 240V!

Someone pointed out that some RV parks only have 30A at 120V so if you travel the info could be important. Me, I am a home body so my garage EVSEay 240V is sufficient. All being equal 240V will charge twice as fast as 120V.

I mispoke, it has an L6-20P so it's 20A not 30A.

This would charge an SE as fast as it could be charged (240v@16A) but would only charge an SEL around half as fast.

If you had a 40 amp circuit on 120V, you could pull 30 amps at 120V with a 7.2 kwh charger on board. It would take twice as long to recharge as 240V at 30 amps. Current is the limiting factor on the charge controller. 30 amps, regardless of voltage.

I can't help but think that most of this discussion belongs in the "eGolf owners" part of this forum..

Ending up getting the car (SE w/ fast charge) for a sale price of $24,747. Monthly payments came out to be $186 + TTL and only had to pay my first month's payment for 15,000mi/yr.

Congratz! Don't forget to read the SE wiki I helped write, especially on how to use the wiper stalk to change radio / music stations.

Thanks the wiki is pretty helpful.

Yea since I'm leasing I don't think I'll be affected by AMT. Also, since I'm in Maryland, they cover 50% of the installation + costs of the EV charger. Add that with the 30% tax credit from the federal government, I'm only paying 20% out of my pocket for the charger. I don't see anything about the UL requirement, so I believe the JuiceBox is still eligible for the credit. Also, the company said they were going to get UL certified for the JuiceBox by the end of the year.

Hi bhan89. I'm in good ole Baltimore, trying to decide between the Leaf and EGolf and thus lurking in these forums. I didn't realize MD covers some of the cost of EV charger installation. I couldn't find any info in a quick web search. Can you point me in the right direction?

By the way, how are you liking your EGolf? I preferred it to the Leaf when I test drove, but the lease they are offering me is so much more than the Leaf. They offered me $335/mo + TTL for an SEL for a 36-month lease with 12.5k mi/year. Not sure I'm gonna do much better unless I drive around to other dealerships, which I'm not sure I really want to do.

http://energy.maryland.gov/transportation/Pages/incentives_evserebate.aspx

That has all the info for the MD incentives for EV charger.

Been enjoying my egolf so far. I work in Baltimore so I commute back and forth. I didn't really shop around for the SEL. I got my SE w/ Fast Charge for $186/MO + TTL for 15,000mi/yr. I would just email around to get an idea of what prices you could get. If you don't mind getting an SE, then I could probably point you to the dealership I got my car from.

Thank you for the link. That is helpful. I honestly didn't know there is a rebate for home charging systems!

I really prefer the leather interior (leatherette actually; I presume that means fake leather) and thus I've been looking at the SEL. But I should probably try to get over that since the other features that come with the SEL (navigation system, DVD player) are completely unimportant to me. It sounds like you got a great deal especially for Maryland, where I get the sense deals are not as abundant (when compared to CA.) Congrats! And thanks for the info.
