Hi, everyone!

We have 2 Golf at the moment: an electric one (2018 and 45k) and also a petrol one (2016). We want to replace one of these by buying something with a longer range. The question is which car should I replace? The electric one or the petrol one? We charge only at home, and we have never used a fast charger on the electric Golf.

What is your experience with getting a second electric car? Any comparisons?

There are a lot of EVs that now get over 300 miles of range. Lots of choices.

We started with a Kia Soul EV and then a VW eGolf. My kids got their licenses and now drive them. My wife likes driving electric as well, so we traded in her ICE for an electric. I mostly ride an electric motorcycle (Zero SR/S) but keep a big ICE SUV for hauling stuff around. We mostly charge at home and have two independent level 2 chargers.

I would recommend replacing your eGolf with a longer range electric and keeping the ICE one for now. I just had to have my SUV serviced, oil change and smog check, but it is convenient and adds flexibility.

We've had very good service with Kia, not so much with VW.

Where are you located? Your profile says North Dakota, but you say "petrol" as if you're in the UK.

If you're in North Dakota, then you're going to want to keep the ICE Golf for long trips and emergencies (e.g. need to suddenly travel 100 miles in a hurry, but your EV only has 30 miles of range left). So replace the eGolf with something newer with longer range.

In the UK where travel distances are shorter, you may be able to get away with replacing the ICE Golf so you have two EVs. It would depend on your driving patterns and and price of electricity vs petrol.

That said, I would highly recommend test-driving newer cars first. While the Golf is a fine, sporty car, it's a budget car. Whenever I drive it, I can immediately tell that it's a lot noisier, features have been cut to bring down its price (e.g. lack of keyless entry on the back door handles on my 2016), and its construction feels less robust than my ICE car and my parents' and sister's car. You may decide to replace the Golf you drive more after you test drive some newer EVs, just to have a nicer ride.
