Hello,

I appear to have a problem with the head unit located in the glove box. The symptom is that there is no sound from the radio/usb/etc.. The functions otherwise work fine.
If I press and hold Menu, then start update with no SD card in the unit, the audio turns on.

I currently have "5g0 035 044 b" unit in the glove box. Can this be replaced? If yes, do I need the exact same unit (hard to find), or will similar units work too? Do I need to do anything else or is it just plug & play?

It's not plug and play. The head unit also has 'component protection'. So if you get another unit, it would need component protection removed and other programming done too. If you get the same part number to replace, it would be easier to copy the adaptation values over from one unit to the other. Changing part numbers is more of a manual process since you need the new unit might not have the same parameters.

Well in their defense, the radio's of today are not like your old tape player from the 70's. They are computers that run a lot of different functions, and just like your computer at home, it's not plug and play when your computer breaks and you need a new one.

If I press and hold Menu, then start update with no SD card in the unit, the audio turns on.

Are you sure you have a hardware problem?

True, but I can download firmware for my computer and replace most parts without special tools.

From my research it is a hardware issue. Soldering fails on two small chips in the glove box MIB unit. I wanted to try software update just to be sure, however it failed.
I found a guy who can replace the unit and program it to the car, will see how that turns out :)
