I’m looking at 2016 e golfs in the Twin Cities, and there are a few that are CPO and a few that aren’t. There seems to be about a $800 premium for the CPO. Do you think it’s worth it?

I don't think I'd do CPO on an e-Golf. There's just not a lot that can go wrong with them.

Unless you are in-elligble for Tax rebates...buying a new eGolf can be less expensive than used...additionally 125 mile range vs 86.
 
The big advantage with the CPO is the included warranty extension, which extends the original 3 year/36k mile bumper to bumper warranty to 5 years/60k; all other warranties remain the same. You do get some level of reconditioning, but that will vary by specific car. Ask to see the CPO checklist to see what was done to a specific car.

Personally, I'd go for the blue CPO'd one, as long as you can verify it has the DCFC port (there's no pic of it unlike with the black one). It's $500 cheaper than the black non-CPO despite being under factory warranty for a longer time, and even though the mileage is higher, at less than 32k it's still young enough to not be a problem. I think the reason it's rated a "Fair" deal is it doesn't take into account that an EV isn't going to have as many components to need servicing, so mileage isn't as much of an issue. Even if you follow the VW-recommended service intervals by the letter (which IMHO is overkill for this car) the blue one would only need maybe a high voltage system check, brake fluid flush, and possibly new tires. And the CPO process may have taken care of this.

BTW the claim of being able to fully charge at 110 volts in just 2 hours is a total lie. Even at 240 volts/30 amps (the most it will charge at without going the DCFC route) it will take about 3-4 hours to go from empty to full.
 
I'm interested to hear how buying new could be cheaper.
I just got a deal on a CPO with DC Fast Charge for under 14k out the door. I got 1k trading in my 05 Civic Hybrid with the check engine light on which is better than I thought since no one would even appraise that car with the CE light.
One caveat (at least in VA maybe) is that you have to do VW financing to get their lowest price. I'm going to give it a couple months and then pay it off.
I'm still waiting on them to finish all the certified process and I'll definitely ask what they had to do. The 80mi range is over 3x my commute so I'm feeling strong about going electric with a factory warratied car for less than half the price of a new one.

Wow, I see how that would be amazing. I had to call a dealership in MD to fully understand how crappy I have it in VA. I could get the federal 7500 rebate but VA doesn't give you a dime for buying electric and the MD credit doesn't apply since I'm not registering the car there. So CPO for 13k vs 17k for new is where I'm at.

If the range is sufficient for your commute, the pre-owned sounds like it would suit you well. There's no point spending 4K more on a bigger battery than you need. I hope its an SEL for that 13k price?
 
It's the SE. It's similar to this listing except I got the DC Fast Charging option for this same price:

And this is on the low end of CPO listings around here. SEL is over 15k and barely any to choose from.
 
I purchased my 2016 eGolf SE at end of lease a couple months ago.
When I found out about the $10K deal for a 2019 eGolf SE, I decided to trade in the 2016 and spent a few thousand dollar to get a brand new car, 40% more range. If you don't own one yet, buy the new 2019 is probably a better choice especially you are in the cold country. Range drops significantly in winter in cold country.
 
My choice on 2016 SE with ~30k miles boiled down to $10,500 for the cheapest one around, vs. $12,300 for one in a slightly nicer condition in a color I liked better with CPO warranty. I chose the cheaper one. But in hindsight I wish I would have spent the extra $1800 and gotten the nicer one...but that's only in part because of the warranty.
