Hey mates,
I recently bought an eGolf privately (2025/03) and got a great deal (hmm...). The car is in great shape except I've learned that the L1 charger that comes with the car won't charge it. After some days of Googling, I've come to know that this is a common issue with eGolfs. I'm sure there's a wealth of knowledge on here that might help me debug this issue and potentially solve it.
- emanager schedules off to debug.
- When I use my Tesla mobile charger with J1772 connector on L1, it also doesn't charge, but it will when I use it on the NEMA 14-50 240V outlet. (Rules out initial L1 charger as faulty).
- Inconveniently, the L2 chargepoint charger at work also doesn't seem to charge it (or will start, then stop). This indicates to me a larger issue.
- The locking pin seems to come out and retract (for now?). I've lubed it with silicon spray just to be sure.
- When plugging the L1 charger in, the charging color sometimes goes pulsing green, but I can see on the dash that the charge icon remains white. On L2, the dash icon it flashes green. On L1, It will then turn solid yellow before eventually just not being lit at all. I've seen a couple threads about this with no resolution.
- I've ordered a bluetooth ODB2 to see if there are any error codes.
I'm trying to figure out if this is worth trying to solve or not, given I can charge the car at home on L2. Because of work charging, I sort of want to get to the bottom of it.

The owner gave me lots of papers with the car. It seems that the car has been to VW for this issue, but they were ok with it? I've attached images of the service, which seems to replace some parts. Service done on 2024/08/08? Tech notes from images:
"1. CHECK CAR NOT CHARGING WITH LEVEL 1 AND 2 CHARGER. TESTED WITH DEALER CHARGER AND CONFIRMED. ALSO TESTED CUSTOMER LEVEL 1 AND NOT CHARGING. CALL TECH LINE 3277223 AND WAITING FOR RESPONSE. AS PER TECH LINE, NEED TO REPLACED LOCK ACTUATOR F498 AND RECHECK, CONTACTED CUSTOMER'S EXTENDED WARRANTY COMPANY VW DRIVE-EASY COVERED REPAIR ... SEE LINE BELOW, WILL NOT COVER THE CHARGE CABLE, CUSTOMER ADVISED . REPLACED LOCK ACTUATOR SOLENOID. RECHECK AT LEVEL 2 CHARGER AND IS OK."
"REPLACED THE LOCK ACTUATOR, HOUSING, WIRE SET, SERVO AND SEAL .......NOTE .... IT IS CHARGING ON OUR LEVEL 2 CHARGER LEVEL 1 CHARGER CUSTOMER SUPPLIED US WITH IS NOT WORKING AT THIS TIME .... SO DIDN'T RECOMMEND TO USE IT, MAY CAUSE CHARGING PROBLEMS LEVEL 2 IS WORKING AND CHARGING AT THIS TIME..... CUSTOMER ADVISED"
I'm unsure whether this means they didn't cover the internal charge cable or the L1 charger itself. Perhaps there was an additional charge for the owner to fix the cable. Given that this job occured not that long ago, I'm thinking of contacting VW to see if they'll fix it, as the VW CARE 40 still seems to be active for a little bit.
What are your thoughts?
