Lack of multi-function steering wheel (SE) vs. CarPlay

I am looking to get the base SE model soon. However the lack of multi-function steering wheel bothers me a bit. However CarPlay support as standard is a welcome addition.

So my question: Does the CarPlay functionality make up for lack of steering wheel buttons/functions for making and receiving calls, changing volume, changing music etc.?

The SE does have the ability to change stations on the Wiper Stalk.
Changing Volume, changing music types (XM -> FM -> AM -> SD Card) are only available on the main screen.

I don't know about Carplay specific, but Android auto only lets you control the Android, nothing else.
