I had intermittent CarPlay failures too, the problem turned out to be too much junk in the lightning port on the phone. Cleaning carefully with a toothpick and compressed air pulled out an enormous amount of "fuzz". Now the connector fully seats in the port and I don't have any trouble with CarPlay in the VW.

What are we talking about, pocket lint accumulating in there? Fuzzy Navel Jelly?
