Hello,

I'm unable to get the door to lock, as many herein have described, by touching the handle exterior. Rather, this action only unlocks it. Anyone know of a setting change which could help? Thank you!

Sounds like your putting your hand somewhat inside the handle, which unlocks the car. I find that using the back of my hand works better as it keeps my fingers from wrapping around the handle by instinct.

There's a small recessed horizontal line on the rearward end of the door handle where the lock (as opposed to unlock) sensor is located. As Jeremy said, you might be inadvertently wrapping your fingers around the handle itself, which will unlock the car.

To keep this from happening I use the "thumbs up" gesture: I press my upward-extending thumb on this area while keeping the other 4 fingers curled into my palm.

Here's VW's instructional video on using the proximity entry system:

A family in my daughter's class at school also has an e-Golf. They had the keyless entry sensor system fail on their car. Due to the hassle of taking the car in for repair, they were prepared to leave it non-functional until the next time they really needed to take it in. However, the incessant beeping notifying them of the failure while driving convinced them to get it fixed sooner than later. It was fixed the same day under warranty.

Most likely your problem is addressed by the posts above, I just wanted to chime in that it's not unheard of for these things to actually fail.

1) try on both sides
2) make sure you aren't touching the inside of the handle. That invalidates it.
3) Make sure you are standing close to the door, the sensor checks to see how close the keys are to it.

The second day of ownership I got a lock failure. The remote buttons still worked though. I figured a new car should not have a failure and that it must be a firmware glitch.

I removed the negative 12V battery terminal to reset the computer. That fixed it and it is still working fine. As per the manual I had to drive the car around the block to reset the sensors but after that everything is fine.

Unlike my old Leaf the windows automatic function did not need to be reset.
