Home Charging Station help for a new owner

I use an OpenEVSE home brew unit. Its timer basically opens o normal charging window. You can set the start and stop times but the defaults of 5 min after midnight and 5 min before 7AM work for most. Basically it starts charging around midnight and finishes well before the 7AM stop time. I...

    Key Fob Battery Life

I just replaced my main fob battery. I was getting not detected messages and it did not want to unlock. The old battery measured 3.03V unloaded. I agree that the fob is poorly engineered. My fob was 6 months old. The battery is cheap and it is easy to replace, but still.

2015 SEL total loss...get another eGolf or Bolt?

I like both cars but what I really liked was the Mercedes service experience. I got an error message and I took it to the Anaheim dealer since Long Beach is no longer convenient for me They treated me really well and gave me a much too large for my taste SUV. The VW looks a whole lot better and...

    Charge port overheating

On the two load testers that I have built I added a thermometer to the J1772 socket to see any overheating. Except for Remna cables it was wasted energy since I have never seen any overheating It is unfortunate that Blink decided on their cables.. I am sere that is a factor in the companies sale.

    Charge port overheating

Blink's with the 2011 and 2012 Leaf's were fine at 16A, The problems were at 30A. Blink sent a firmware update dialing down the current. The real fix is to replace the J1772 cable and connector. Excluding labor a Quick Charge Power cable is around $200 with shipping.

2015 SEL total loss...get another eGolf or Bolt?

You really can not plan your accident timing. I totaled my Mercedes B in property tax season. I could have taken money from my reserve but a new car is hardly an emergency. Besides I find I really like my SEL. I am happy with its short range since I am only nearing 3K miles in six months. When...

    Can't charge at 5A?

Since the tables are purely cosmetic I forced the L2 table and I set the EVSE to 32A. The eGolf charged at 30A at 120V for a short time on a 20A circuit. To me it makes no sense to charge at 120V unless you are at a RV Park or a Truck Stop with only 120V available.. 240V is more than twice as...

    Can't charge at 5A?

You might go with an EVSE like OpenEVSE that lets you set the current. OpenEVSE has an L1 table and an L2 table. Both are settable in steps so you could set the L1 to a low level. OpenEVSE says the L1 minimum is 6A and the L2 minimum is 10A. Chris follows the J1772 specification closely so they...

    Can't charge at 5A?

My Mercedes B came with a L1 EVSE that defaulted to 8A and it was switchable to 12A. At 8A it would charge the car. I do not know what the Tesla based drive train drew as overhead. The J1772 specification lists minimum current. Off hand the 6A earlier quoted sounds about right. The...

Availability of 2017 e-Golf in NorthernCalifornia, discounts

I previously had a Mercedes B Class electric drive car (now the B250E). I liked the car but it was totaled in property tax season. My eGolf currently suits my needs but I was happy with the B. I was not willing to touch my reserve for a car. That is hardly an emergency.

2015 SEL total loss...get another eGolf or Bolt?

Make sure you are comfortable in the Bolt's narrow seats. They were designed for slim people. Many find them uncomfortable.

    OpenEVSE with RTC for sale

It has a 40A four foot long electric range cable with a molded 14-50 plug(like Tesla uses). The neutral is not used so if you label the socket EVSE only you can ignore it but the wire cost vs the labor cost is minimal.

    OpenEVSE with RTC for sale

The cord is the default 20 foot length. I have used 25 foot cords in the past for my Leaf. A twenty foot cable just reaches my eGolf. My Mercedes B EV had the outlet on the other side so a 6 foot cord would work. It really depends on where you mount the EVSE. In my case the panel was outside...

New SE owner - Need longer charger reach ?

Quick Charge Power makes the cables and if you derate from 40A to 30A 50 feet is doable. It really depends on the voltage drop. Since the cable is rated for 40A and the eGolf draws a maximum of 30A there is some leeway. OpenEVSE units can set the current in 2A steps although over 30A will be...

    OpenEVSE with RTC for sale

I just build them in my retirement to keep busy. I sell them at near cost since I am not looking to support a family like vegasbrad.

    OpenEVSE with RTC for sale

I forgot to change the default current. As you can see the eGolf complies with the J1772 specification.

    Which EVSE to buy??

In general the JuiceBox relay is over-rated. They get away with it because that just because the JuiceBox says it is good for 50A most EV's' draw less than 30A so the rest is ignored. A basic eGolf would draw 16A and an enhanced car like my eGolf would draw 30A. They use a relay that is 80A...

    Which EVSE to buy??

As EVSE is considered a continuous load by the NEC. As such the circuit has to be derated to 80%. Thus a 30A circuit is good for 24A, A 40A circuit is 32A, and a 50A circuit is 40A. You can say that it will charge the car in less than 3 hours but the NEC is what it is.

    Which EVSE to buy??

That is a 16A @240V unit. It will fully charge a basic ES or slowly charge an upgraded unit. The beauty of the J1772 spec is that the car's charger adapts to the current the EVSE is offering as long as it is less than the car wants. If you charge overnight the 16A EVSE will serve you well and...
