    Home DC charger

Technically you have a DC Charger - in your car. All EVs have an onboard charger which converts AC to DC, and then charges the battery. Your DC inlet simply circumvents that charger, and allows for an external one. You carry one on board so that you can access the ubiquitous AC electricity...

What changes will there be in the 2016 e-Golf?

I have yet to read a blurb that states the battery capacity of the 2016 eGolf. Do we know for certain that it will continue on with the same 24.2kWh battery? Nissan has all but confirmed the option for a 30kWh battery in the 2016 Leaf...

Only 293 US egolfs sold in June

I think a major hurdle on the west coast is the choice of quick charging port. The CHAdeMO network (which supports the Leaf) is much more robust than the CCS network (which supports the eGolf, among others). The good news is that VW and BMW have joined forces and declared 2015 the "Year of the...

Volt Owner thinking of getting an e-Golf

Could you elaborate on this? I test drove a Volt a few times and almost bought one. I did enjoy the way it drove. I haven't gotten a chance to test drive the eGolf yet.

Great VW 8 page article about batteries

It definitely requires you to sign up to read it. It is supposedly free, but I really don't need any more spam or accounts.

    electric defrost windshield

If you heat up the air, it will have the same moisture content as it started with, but will temporarily be able to hold more moisture while it is still warm. But the air will cool quickly when it comes in contact with a cool surface such as your windshield. Yes, it certainly uses more energy...

    electric defrost windshield

Note that A/C is NOT the same thing as cooling, although it has come to mean that in the common vernacular. While the A/C is necessary to cool the air, it is also necessary to DRY the air.

    always 72!

How obnoxious! I don't own an eGolf (yet, anyway), but both my Leaf and my Insight remember the temperature to which the climate control was set. This feature *should* have nothing to do with the drive train. Does anyone know if the other Golf variants have this issue as well?

12 Volt Starter Battery, what it's for

The Leaf's inverter provides something like 100A to the 12V circuit. So a power inverter should really be about 1kW or less. Does anyone know what the eGolf's DC-DC is capable of? Can it push that kind of power, or is it really just a few hundred Watts to keep the 12V battery topped off?

    My new Black 2015 e-Golf

I would love to see the math behind some of these claims. No car will ever be "free". Certainly not a $35k car. You pay $xxx every month for the lease and $y for electricity. Sure, it's much cheaper than your previous car, but that doesn't make it free.

    Cold climate charger issue...

Yeah, I never leave an outdoor plug uncovered in the winter. Either get a holster or a cap to protect it from snow and ice. I am lucky enough to have chargers at work as well. Every day, I have to go around and cover the plugs that others have left exposed. I'd love to blame it on the Volt...

12 Volt Starter Battery, what it's for

I'm guessing it's all the 12V accessories that are the same as the gas Golf. On my Leaf, there is a DC-DC converter to charge the battery whenever the car is on or charging.

Does this e-Golf ad offend you?

I'm with you. The whole tagline is an apology for the eGolf being electric.

The Chevrolet Bolt Will Be A 200-Mile Electric Tesla Fighter

$30,000 price absolutely includes the tax credit: http://insideevs.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/Chevrolet-Bolt-EV-concept-from-NAIAS-stage-berra-4.jpg 2017 is looking to be a breakout year for the EV. Other than the Bolt, the Leaf 2.0 will be out with ~150 miles of range, the Tesla Model III...

    Not available in PA?

The Nissan Leaf is available nationwide. The eGolf is only available in select states (for now). I suspect this will change in the near future as they work out the bugs and build up knowledgeable sales/repair staff.

Bedford MA dealer lists Holiday savings $28,765- lease :(

The $7500 tax credit is one reason you might do that. It is non-refundable which means if you don't owe that much in taxes, you don't get the full benefit. If you lease, you don't have to worry about whether you qualify for the whole thing. VW technically owns the car, so they take the full...

Paying Taxes again when you buy after your Lease

When you lease a car, you essentially agree to pay for the purchase price minus the residual. You pay taxes on the portion that you are paying. When you buy, you then pay taxes on the residual. So therefore you are paying taxes "twice", but each time you are only paying a portion of the tax...

    220 Charger

It will be more expensive to go through VW. Instead, buy an EVSE online or through Home Depot, and hire an electrician you trust to do the install. Many good EVSEs can be had for less than $1000. Installation costs completely depend on the setup of your house. If you have spare capacity in a...

    electric defrost windshield

I concur. The heated windshield is one of the most compelling features of the eGolf over the Leaf. As a work-around to what you described, I went to Harbor Freight and spent $10 on one of these: http://www.harborfreight.com/12V-Auto-Heater-Defroster-with-Light-60525.html It draws 180W instead...

How is range that shows on the display calculated?

You're right to question how the range is calculated. But I really doubt a photo of the range estimate will mean anything in terms of insurance. Most cars calculate range based on previous rates of consumption and remaining energy in the battery / fuel tank. If the car only has a few miles on...
